The BC Surgical Society held its 72nd Annual Spring Meeting May 9-11, 2019 at the Penticton Lakeside Resort, BC. The meeting was attended by 108 surgeons and residents, and was enjoyed by all.
Our Royal College Speaker was Dr. Sulaiman Nanji, a surgeon-scientist with the Department of Surgery at Queen’s University in Kingston, Ontario. He has earned a MD, PhD, and designation as a clinical investigator through the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons.
Other guest speakers included Dr. Carl Brown who gave an update on the Surgical Oncology Network, Dr. David Evans who spoke on the role of surgeons in the BC Trauma System, and Dr. Hamish Hwang who presented the new UBC reticulum website to connect surgeons across the province.
The conference opened with a resident meet and greet on the Thursday evening.

Resident research prizes at the Annual Awards Banquet were awarded as follows:
Dr. Jieun Cha, 1st place
(Medical Student) Mr. Zach Sagorin, 2nd place
and Dr. Elizaveta Vasilyeva, for “Best Visual” in the Quick Shot category.
The Banquet guest speaker was Mr. Ted Kane, previously a Respiratory Therapist, whose passion for wine led him to start his own winery 10 years ago – Riverstone Winery in Oliver.
Guests enjoyed wine tasting hosted by Ted and his wonderful staff at the cocktail reception prior to dinner.
Our incoming President for the 2019-2020 term is Dr. Ahmer Karimuddin.
